CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH UCLA Photo courtesy of Glen MacDonald At UCLA, the environment and sustainability are top of mind — and your generosity will support research initiatives that directly address the overall betterment of our global health. What does UCLA do for the environment? • RESEARCH — Our research centers span from above the clouds at the White Mountain Research Center, a lab at 10,000 feet to secluded and unlit regions at the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, the first sky dark reserve in the United States and the third largest in the world. These centers allow important research and discovery to be conducted to better serve the public good with knowledge on altitude testing, space travel, astronomy and more. • EDUCATION — In research produced by a UCLA ecologist and published by the Dark Sky Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, artificial light is studied to better educate the world on how to minimize the consequences of global light pollution. This research includes knowledge about the negative effects of artificial light on human health, ecosystems and quality of life. • PUBLIC SERVICE — Our undergraduate students and UCLA ecology professionals set research plots on a coral reef in the French Polynesian island of Moorea to discover the role of sea urchins in coral reef recovery. This work realized the ally sea urchins can be to corals, thus serving marine ecosystems through their recovery and allowing conservationists to better advocate for sea urchin protection. Celebrate Earth Day with a gift to the UCLA Fund. Your generosity will help foster a sustainable future for generations to come! Together, we can support research and education that gives back to our planet. Photos courtesy of Bryce David (left) and Elijah Catalan (right)
