Supporting student health and wellness in Los Angeles-area middle schools and high schools
The Problem: Inactivity in youth due to the lack of even the most basic resources is jeopardizing the future health and well-being of our children. This lack of physical activity can lead to excess weight gain and overweight children are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem and depression, develop chronic conditions and have a 70-80% chance of becoming unhealthy adults. Societal and community factors such as: under-resourced schools, limited access to nutritious, affordable foods and beverages and neighborhoods that do not allow for safe physical activity, all play a role in the making healthy choices unavailable for our children. Moreover, while inactivity and obesity rates are on the rise, physical education departments remain critically underfunded and lack the resources (ex. the most minimal exercise equipment) to help children be active. In addition, teachers and administrators have experienced extreme burnout and high turnover in their departments further affecting today’s youth.
The Solution: Now is the time to intervene where our children spend most of their time, in school, and change these trends. Your gift will support UCLA Health Sound Body Sound Mind (SBSM) provide the tools and resources necessary to help combat inactivity and empower our children to start making healthier lifestyle choices. Your donation enables us to give schools our extensive and all-inclusive program, which includes state-of-the-art fitness centers, innovative curriculums and professional development for physical education teachers and school administrators. Countless studies show that exercise helps children build self-confidence and become better learners, improves academic outcomes, and provides significant mental health and social-emotional benefits. In addition, our professional development training program equips today’s PE teachers with the knowledge on how to implement an efficient and successful exercise and nutrition curriculum.
How Your Gift Helps: Support our future leaders with the tools necessary to build self-confidence, a healthier lifestyle and a flourishing tomorrow by donating today.
