Helping UCLA make graduate studies affordable for top students.
The Graduate Opportunity Fellowships Program (GOFP) provides tuition assistance to students who may not otherwise be able to pursue graduate studies, such as professional master’s degrees — students like GOFP recipient Alex Anderson, a Master of Fine Arts student in ceramics.
“My fellowship year coincided with my first year in the MFA ceramics program,” says Anderson. “Had I not received this fellowship, UCLA would have been a financially distant dream. I knew it was the right time for me to begin my graduate studies, and I knew Professor Adrian Saxe was the best person to continue to guide my work, but I did not know how I was going to fund this next stage.”
Graduate Fellowships cover the cost of tuition and fees for graduate students. These endowed fellowships are typically targeted to a specific student group or field of study, and may make a difference in a student’s decision to come to UCLA.
“This fellowship brought me to UCLA,” says Anderson.
The financial assistance also helped Anderson expand his thinking. Instead of worrying about how to pay for school, he’s now able to explore bigger questions in his art.
“I began to find answers to the questions that always occupied my consciousness about my work and the practice of making meaning,” says Anderson. “I learned how little I knew about disciplines outside my focus and about art at large, despite the years of training preceding my time at UCLA.”
Anderson, who expects to graduate in 2018, says: “This period has been invaluable to the advancement of my work. Guidance from excellent professors across disciplines, new perspectives, knowledge and experiences offered by the program allow me to make my best work.”
He adds, “Without the Graduate Opportunity Fellowship, I would not be the artist I am continuing to become.”
