Bringing together health-care industry leaders for public monthly discussions of critical health-related issues.
UCLA Professor Emeritus Paul Torrens, M.D., wrote the book on health services — literally. His Introduction to Health Services is now in its seventh edition, but his true claim to fame lies in his ability to teach and connect with students.
For 40 years as a professor of health policy and management at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, Torrens patiently guided, mentored and advised generations of students, helping many shape distinguished careers in public health
Now, former students, colleagues and friends have an opportunity to honor Torrens by endowing a fund to ensure that the Health Forum at UCLA continues in perpetuity as the Paul Torrens Health Forum at UCLA.
Torrens spent his career bridging the academic and practice worlds. He began the free monthly health forums to bring together health and health-care leaders, community groups, faculty and students to discuss critical issues in public health. Each month, an audience of more than 100 gathers for a lively discussion and debate about the way forward — a discussion particularly relevant today as the country charts a new course in health care.
Over four decades at UCLA, Torrens created and nurtured a community of people who care deeply about health care. The Paul Torrens Health Forum at UCLA is a fitting legacy for a man who has done so much for so many.
